If you have occupied a position for a long time or came up through the system with the old school
philosophies, you may find it is difficult to apply those same practices you are used to using on your new, younger employees or players.
This is because times and people have changed. Although there my be a few new employees or players with the old school frame of mind, you may be finding that the drill sergeant leadership style that used to be the norm just isn’t working anymore. Now What?
Either you change with them, or more than likely you lose your team, and your businesses performance goes south. I know change is difficult, but in these times it is necessary for success. Just as we have watched the industrial revolution come and go we too have watched the Bobby Knight type leadership become obsolete.
These days you must care, you must be in tune with your teams learning style and most of all your team must believe you care. You must be willing to show true and genuine compassion for the people who work or play for you.
This does not mean you cannot get upset or speak loudly at someone, but what it does mean is those times have to be the exception and not the rule.
You may not like these changes and you may think people these days are soft, and you may even be right, but being right isn’t the goal.
The question is would you rather be right or be successful? The decision is yours and yours alone, and the great part is you can be both. You can acknowledge the change, not like it, but adapt anyway, and give yourself a chance to be successful, or you can just keep yelling and hope someone is listening, but like I said the decision is yours and yours alone.
