I will say it, you do not squish any bugs when you hit. Although your foot may rotate it is your back hip driving open and forward that is causing it to do so. If you think about squishing the bug you will turn on your back too much causing your swing to turn out of the zone. The back foot does not have any part in the swing accept following what the back hip does. You will see many pictures of guys at contact with their foot in the air or their back toe is barely touching the ground. This happens when the back hip drives into the front foot. Remember we don’t want to over our front foot. Also, be careful when looking at swings that prove a bug has been squished and realize at what part of the swing the hitter is at. After contact hitters should have driven so hard into the front foot they get pushed to their back foot. Also, understand that the natural follow through of the swing brings the hitter back as well. Please watch this link to see what I am talking about.

Notice in this clip of Josh Hamilton that while the hip is driving forward his back foot is actually sliding on it’s toe because it is being pull forward by his back hip. Also, notice after contact as his hands finish he begins to fall back to his back foot.
