Now that you have taken your lead from first it is time to get your secondary lead as the pitcher goes to home plate. The tricky part with the secondary is you if you get too far you will have your weight on your back foot when the catcher catches the ball or worse yet if the ball is in the dirt not allowing you to take the extra base. If you don’t get far enough you haven’t given yourself the best chance to take the extra base on a ball in the dirt or go from first to third on a basehit into right or right center. You always want to make sure you are balanced during your secondary with the weight slightly on your front foot as you land. This positioning will enable you to push and get back to first base on a ball that is caught by the catcher to avoid getting picked off, and it will also allow you to use your momentum to take extra bases. If you are not stealing do not try and get a great start to your secondary, always make sure the pitcher goes to the plate, you can not get picked off if you are not stealing that is a rule. So when you are comfortable the pitcher is going to the plate, stay low and shuffle toward the next base. Remember to stay balanced, read the ball in the dirt before it hits the dirt, and get your front foot down with a little more weight then your back foot, and do this while the ball is crossing the plate. Be aggressive.
