Sometimes in my line of work I run into parents who are a little hard to deal with. For example in the seven years I have been giving private baseball lessons I have been approached to work with a kid under the age of six 10 times. All of us baseball fans know baseball requires very intricate movements in a very precise order. Just to be clear I have done one lesson with a kid under six and I never did it again. It was not worth it, a kid this age has a hard time picking up a pencil and writing their name in a straight line even when the paper has lines on it, so how in the world are they going to get anything out of a hitting lesson. Parents this is my suggestion to you. Save your money on the lesson and go by a plastic bat and ball, then go play with your kid in the front yard. At our facility we will not work with any kids under the age of 9 and I really would rather parents waited a little longer then that.
I will leave you with this as a testament to how crazy parents can be. A lady walks into our place and says “I hear you guys do hitting lessons”. “Yes we do” I reply. “Well I really want to get my son started because his Dad was all-state in baseball in high school and I was all state in softball as well” she says. I say “that is awesome your kid has good athletic genes, when would you want to schedule a lesson”? I ask. “Tomorrow at 10:30” she says. “Doesn’t he have school” I reply puzzled. “No he is 2 years old, so I can bring him anytime that works for you” she says with an excited tone. “How about 10:30 a.m. in about 8 years” is my answer.
I was shocked by this, needles to say she was upset with my reply but I just simply can not handle parents who think their kid is destined for the big leagues and everyday they don’t have him in lessons is a day they will never get back.
