For those of you who are seriously committed to the game of baseball and being the best player you can possibly be know that baseball season does not stop because the snow is flying. I love when I get people who want to get one hitting lesson the day before tryouts start to give their kid a tune up. You don’t give your kid a tune up in a 30 minute hitting lesson the day before tryouts, but parents have tried this over the past seven years countless times, and I just shake my head. If you want to waste money like this just throw it out the window as you are driving down the road, but if you are serious about getting better you have to get on an off season program.
The time to get better at individual skills is in the off season. It is very hard if not impossible for a player to make significant changes during the season due to the amount of reps it takes to fix a bad habit. This is the same principle that says one hitting lesson will not fix anything and may actually make things worse. You must practice, practice, practice to become consistent, and create muscle memory and baseball players in the colder states have from October to March to get inside and work on their game. These are the months you will get better, you can hit, throw, field, and also don’t forget to workout too. If you are for real about playing baseball and your goal is to play in college you do not have the luxury of an off season. Find a place to practice indoors and make it your second home, because I promise you this, if you wait until the snow melts to pick up your bat and glove you will be way behind those kids who busted their butts all winter.
