It seems that in baseball today everyone is OK with players striking out 100+ times a season. I don’t understand when this happened and I don’t like it. Growing up striking out was embarrassing, you were not afraid of it but you surely didn’t just brush it off like players to today. Lead off guys with 100 K’s, really this is absurd and frustrating. Baseball needs more Placido Polancos and Tony Gwynn’s, guys who knew how to handle the bat. Baseball is going back to a little smaller game even though balls will still fly with or without the juice simply because ball parks have been built to make the HR a little easier so people will buy more tickets.
But hold on, I know it is a business but it is still baseball right? I understand the big guys going down on strikes but I also know they are going to put up 40+ dingers every year. So yeah there is give and take but not for the entire line up. The Tigers alone had 311 K’s between their 9 hole and leadoff hitters. 311 for two players, get real, this brand of baseball is offensive to fans or at least the fans who know the game and understand a leadoff guy should not strike out like that and if you are going to strike out as much as Inge then you need more then 28 dingers and an awful glove.
Kids, today’s game is something that will go away soon. If you want to be like a certain player be like Placido be like Tony Gwynn. Tony Gwynn never struck out more than 40 times in a single season…I know he is in the hall of fame but the point is he took pride in putting the ball in play because when the fielders have to make a play anything can happen. You young kids while you are dreaming about HR because we all know Chicks dig the long ball, think about how much they can’t stand the strikeout.
Sorry for the rant but sometimes I have to air it out a little.
